Dian Fossey eat your heart out

Mayo visited Grania and I in early 2008 while we were living in Uganda. One memory that always makes me chuckle is the time we went chimp-tracking in Kyamboro Gorge. The tracking was more arduous than I had been led to believe, and I began to sense Mayo was less than impressed that her daughter's boyfriend had arranged for her to undertake such a gruelling hike through the thick jungle. Crossing precariously a wide, crocodile-infested river - by means of an overturned tree, helped across by a ranger with an AK-47 slung across his back that kept clanging against the tree - was distinctly hair-raising.

After several hours, we had not seen a single chimp, so in desperation Mayo reached into her bag and brought out a banana. She spent the rest of the trek enthusiastically brandishing her banana at the empty canopy in an attempt to lure the chimps down... all to no effect.

They must not have been hungry that day, but we laughed about it for a long time over our Nile Specials that evening. Thank you Mayo for all the happy memories.
